John Mayer Handley was born in 1891 at Derby and was the son of James a railway signalman and Emma Handley née Cope of 9, Pear Tree Rd., Derby. His father was born in 1854 at Scotland and his mother was born in 1866 at Stoke on Trent, they were married in 1880 at Lichfield and had the following children, Margaret Philis b1881 Staffordshire, their remaining children were all born in Derby and were Tom Arthur b1880, John Mayer b1891, Winifred b1887 and Hilda May b1900. In the 1911 census , he is at Gibralter, he is shown as being 20 yrs a gunner and is serving with No 54 Company Royal Garrison Artillery. He was the brother of Mrs A Simmins of Forest Road Nottingham.
Corporal John Mayer Handley enlisted on 22nd October 1908 at Nottingham, he was 18 yrs old and was a butcher, he served with the service number 2863 in the Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Special reserve . On 19th April 1909 when he was 18 yrs 7 months of age he joined the Royal Garrison artillery at Tynmouth . On 10th December 1909 he was posted to Gibralter where he served until 23rd October 1914 and was returned to England where he served until the 6th March 1915. He embarked for France on 6th March 1915 and served with 123rd Heavy Battery Royal Garrison Artillery. He was killed in action on 11th May 1915 and is buried at Perth Cemetery (China wall) Belgium.
