He was the son of William and Eliza Derrick. In 1901 they lived at 155 Dame Agnes Street, St Ann's Nottingham. He was the husband of Elizabeth (née Green) Derrick of 29 Sketchley Street, Blue Bell Hill Road St Ann's.
