Family History

Bert James was born in 1896 at Nottingham, the son of Ernest James a general labourer and Jane Emma James née Smith formerly Hart. of 108 Gregory Boulevard Nottingham. Ernest James was born in 1870 at Nottingham, Jane Emma Smith was born in 1858 at Shropshire, she had previously been married to Benjamin Hart in 1879 and had 4 children with him before he died in 1892. Ernest and Jane Emma married in 1894 at Nottingham. In 1911 the family are living at 26 St Pauls Avenue, Hyson Green, Nottingham Ernest James is 41 yrs and is a general labourer.

Military History

Rifleman Bert James enlisted on 6th January 1915, giving his age as 19 yrs and 4 months and his occupation as that of a brass finisher, his next of kin was his father Ernest James. He was posted to the Rifle Brigade and joined the battalion at the Winchester barracks on 10th January 1915. He landed in France on 22nd July 1915 and was killed i action on 5th October 1915 and is buried in the Royal Irish Rifles Graveyard, Laventie.

Nottingham Evening Post obituary 19 November 1915: 'Rifleman B James, 10th Rifle Brigade, 108 Gregory Boulevard, killed in action aged 19.' The article, which named two other casualties, included a photograph of James. Research by Rachel Farrand
