Ernest Dawn was born on 3rd August 1881 at Nottingham, he was baptised on 27th June 1887 at St Anns, Nottingham, he was the son of the late Edward William Dawn a pork butcher and the late Mary Hannah Dawn née Alvey of St Ann's, Nottingham.

His father Edward William was bon in 1847 at Newark, he died in 1909 aged 62 yrs, his mother Mary Hannah Alvey was born in 1853 at Nottingham, she died in 1915 also aged 62 yrs, they were married on 16th November 1870 at St Marys, Nottingham, they went on to have 12 children.

In the 1911 census Ernest Dawn is a border living at 59 Red Lion Street, Nottingham, he is one of 9 lodgers living with Robert Connor 40 yrs a publican, Ernest is 29 yrs old and is an out porter.

Military history

Private Ernest Dawn enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 21st March 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.
