Ernest Brown was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of Sidney Brown a greengrocer and Elizabeth Brown née Davis of 49 Manvers Street Sneinton Nottingham.
His father was born in 1870 at Nottingham, his mother Elizabeth Davis was born in 1870 at Mansfield, they were married in 1891 and had 5 children, Ernesy born 1894, Nellie born 1892, Edith born 1896, Harold born 1898 and Eliza born 1900.
In the 1911 census the family are living at 49 Manvers Street, Sneinton, Nottingham. Sidney 41 yrs is a greengrocer he is living with Elizabeth Davis 41 yrs and their 7 children including Ernest 17 yrs a lace threader.
In 1917 his father married Lily Emma Howellt (1895-1967) they were married in Nottingham and had a further 8 children.
Private Ernest Brown enlisted 4th April 1912 at Nottingham giving his age as 17 yrs and 9 months, he was a factory hand, he served with the2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he went to France 11th November 1914 and was killed in action, 2nd May 1915, by a German sniper, whilst serving in the line near Houplines, France he is buried at Houplines Communal cemetery extension, France

'Brown. In affectionate remembrance of Pte. Ernest Brown killed in action May 2nd 1915. The supreme sacrifice. - From dad and sisters.'
