Arthur Drain was born in 1899 at Manchester, he was the son of John a stone mason and Elizabeth Drain née Palmer and the brother of John, Thomas William, Albert and James Drain of 25 Grainger Street, Meadow Lane, Nottingham.

His father John was born in 1874 at Glasgow, his mother Elizabeth Palmer was born in 1876 at Nottingham, they were married on 28th December 1896 at St Thomas church, Ardwick, Lancashire, they went on to have 5 children.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 34 Grainger Street Meadow Lane Nottingham.John 37 yrs is a stone mason, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 35 yrs and their children, John 14 yrs an errand boy, Arthur 12 yrs a schoolboy, Thomas William 3 yrs, Albert 3 months and James 3 months old.

Military history

Private Arthur Drain enlisted at Nottingham on 3rd April 1917 giving his address as 25 Grainger Street, Nottingham, he gave his age as 17 yrs and 357 days he was a bench help his next of kin was his father John of the same address, he was posted to the reserves. He was mobilised on 10th May 1917 and reported to the Sherwood Fresters Depot at Derby, Later transferred to 22643 West Riding Regiment. He embarked from Folkstone on 31st March 1917 arriving in Boulogne the same day. Posted on 4th April 1918 to the Yorks and Lancashire Regiment he was killed in action on 11th April 1918, he was buried at the Huts Cemetery, Belgium

'Drain. In loving memory of Pte A Drain Yorks and Lancs killed in action 11th day of April aged 19. - From his broken hearted mother and father and brothers and brother Jack in Italy.'
