William Howard Simpson was born in 1883 the son of the late George Simpson a bill poster and Sarah Ann Simpson née Richardson. George was born in 1844 in Nottingham Sarah Ann Richardson was born in 1853 at Hockerton his siblings were Maud Mary b1880, William Herbert b1884,John Henry b1886 and Arthur b1893 all were born in Nottingham. William Howard Simpson married Sarah Harris on 2nd January 1905 at Nottingham, they went on to have the following children, Sidney born 1905 Eveline born 1907, Ernest Howard born 1909, Leonard Arthur born 1912 and Lillian Olive born 1914, the family lived at Main Road Old Chilwell Nottingham. In 1911 the family are living at Main Road, Chilwell and are shown as William 27 yrs a general labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah 27 yrs and their children, Sidney 6yrs, Eveline 4 yrs, and Ernest 1 year old. Following Williams death his widow Sarah was granted a pension of 25 shillings a week for herself and her 5 children.
Private William Howard Simpson first enlisted into the Derbyshire Regiment on 2nd June 1902 and later purchased his discharge. At the outbreak of war he was mobilised on 28th August 1914 at Nottingham , he was 28 yrs and 271 days old, he was a foundry labourer and lived at Main Road Chilwell, his next of kin was his wife Sarah of the same address. He was posted to the 2nd battalion Sherwood Foresters and embarked for France on 11th November 1914 to join the British Expeditionary Force. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 29th January 1915 and to Corporal on 20th July 1915. He went missing in action and was presumed killed in action on 9th August 1915. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
