Theophilus Burton

Known as 'Bert', Theophilus was the son of John and his first wife Alice Burton. His father was born in Lincoln and his mother in Blackburn, Lancashire. It is likely that John married Alice (Tasker) in 1871 (J/A/S Gainsborough). They had at least three children; Fanny, John William b. 1871, and Theophilus b. 28 July 1875, all of whom were born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. In 1881 John (44), an iron moulder, and Alice (40) were living in Bedford's Yard, Willoughby Street, Gainsborough, with their three children, Fanny (12), John William (9) and Theophilus (5). John appears to have remarried by the time of the 1891 Census as his wife is named as Harriett (41) born Lambeth, London. John and Harriett were living at 51 Sandfield Lane, Gainsborough, and only John's youngest child, Theophilus (15), a brick maker, was still living at home. Also in the household on the night of the census were Emily Shepherd (18, b. Marylebone, London), described as John's niece, who was a dressmaker, and William Pycroft (27) an engine fitter who was a boarder. Theophilus joined the RMLI in October 1894 and in 1901 was serving in HMS Mohawk. He was discharged from the RMLI in November that year. Theophilus married Maria Sybylla Tasker in 1906 (J/A/S Nottingham). In 1911 Theophilus and Maria were living at 36 Baden Powell Road, Sneinton, Nottingham; there were no children of the marriage. Also in the household was their nephew John Tasker (22), a telegraph wireman for a railway company, and a married couple, George Welton (31), a warehouseman, and Ada Welton (25), a cutter (fancy warehouse), who were described as boarders. When Theophilus re-enlisted in September 1914 he and Maria were living at 124 Sneinton Boulevard, Sneinton, and this was still their address at the time of his death in 1918.
