Family history

Bertram Fowler Known as Bertie or Bert was born in 1897 at Nottingham, he was the son of James a painter Eliza Fowler née Peck and the brother of Harry, May, Jack, Horrace and Mary Ann Fowler.

His father James was born in 1869 at Basford, his mother Eliza Peck was born in 1872 at Nottingham, they were married on 10th October 1891 at St Albans Church, Sneinton, Nottingham, they went on to have 5 children.

In the 1911 census the family lived at 1 Stanley Terrace Lower Eldon Street Sneinton Nottingham Eliza Fowler 39 yrs is married and is a lace hand, she is living with her children, Harry 21 yrs a carter, Berty 14 yrs a printers labourer, Mary 6 yrs of age, Jack 8 yrs of age and Annie 3 years old.

Military history

Lance Corporal Bertie Fowler enlisted at Nottingham he served with the 15th battalion Sherwood Fresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 20th October 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memroial.

'Fowler. Killed in action November 21st (sic) Lance-Corpl Signaller Bert Fowler Sherwood Foresters. - From mother, sisters Lily, Clara, Harry (in France) also brother in law Harold.'
