Fred was born in 1893 the son of Thomas a general labourer and Alice Maud Kent (née Potts) of 19, Cambridge Street Radford Nottingham. His mother was born in 1866 in Louth Lincolnshire and had a son Thomas born in 1890 prior to marrying her first husband Thomas Kent in 1892 at Nottingham. They had four children - Fred b.1893, Simeon b.1895, Maud b.1897 , Henry b.1900. Her first husband Henry Kent died in 1904 in Nottingham aged 54. Alice Maud then married Harry Holland (b,1869 in Whyburton, Leicestershire) at Nottingham in 1906. Harry already had two children Harry b,1903 and Alice b,1905. They then had a son Albert born 1910. In 1911 they lived at 5 Towles Yard Ossington Street Radford Nottingham. Fred married his wife Elizabeth Rose Hart (born 6th December 1891)in 1913, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at 23 Cambridge Street, Radford and went on to have the following children, Frederick born 1914, William Harry born 1915 and Simeon born 1918. Following his death his widow Elizabeth was awarded a pension of 26 shilling and 3 pence which commenced on 22nd April 1918.
Private Frederick Kent, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles). He landed in France on 18th August 1915 and was killed in action on 28th September 1917. His name is commemorated on Tyne Cot Memorial. Panels 99 to 102 & 162 to 162A
His brother also served and died during the Great War - Private Simeon Kent, 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles), died of nephritis at No.16 General Hospital, Le Treport on 11th August 1916 In memoriam published 28th September 1918 in Nottingham Evening Post :- “KENT. – In loving memory of Pte. Simeon Kent, died on active service August 11th, 1916; also Pte. Fred Kent, killed in action September 28th, 1917, husband of Elizabeth Kent. Grief borne in silence. – From his loving wife and children, mother and father, brothers (in France) and sisters, Mr. and Mrs. Holland, Cambridge-street, Radford.” in memoriam published 29th September 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “KENT. – In loving memory of Pte. Fred Kent, 2/7th Sherwood Foresters, killed in action Sept. 28th, 1917; also the two beloved children of the above, William, aged 4 years, and Simeon, aged 1 year, died December 6th and 10th, 1918. Gone but not forgotten. – From sorrowing wife and child Freddie. “KENT. – In loving memory of our dear brother, Pte. Fred Kent, killed in action Sept. 28th, 1917.
