Family history

Arthur Brooks was born on 23rd January 1884 at Sneinton, he was the son of William a twisthand and Betsy Brooks née Perry, of 29 North Street, Sneinton.

Hs father William was born in 1858 at Grantham, his mother Betsy Perry was born in 1857 at Nottingham, they were married in 1878 at Nottingham, they went on to have 13 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood.

In the 1911 census his parents and siblings were living at 29 North Street, Sneinton, William 52 yrs is a twisthand, he is living with his wife Betsy 52 yrs a housewife and their 3 children.

He was the husband of Annie Shelton born 1st March 1886, they were married on 18th June 1910 at St Stephens Church, Sneinton, they went on to have 4 children, Annie born 20th November 1910, Arthur born 25th August 1912, William born 23rd September 1914 and Alfred 30th June 1916.

In the 1911 census Arthur and his family lived at 177 Windmill Lane Sneinton Nottingham, Arthur 27 yrs a lace maker plain net, he is living with his wife Annie 25 yrs and their daughter Annie 4 months old.

Commencing 4th February 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 28 shillings and 9 pence a week

Military history

Private Arthur Brooks enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action, 23rd July 1917, by German shellfire whilst in the trenches to the north of Ypres, Belgium his is buried at La Belle Alliance Cemetery, Belgium.
