John Cooper was born in 1888 at Leeds the son of Mrs. Harriet Green John married Lavinia Frances Aplin (born 15th March 1890) in 1909 at Nottingham, they lived at 1 Burton Terrace, Buxton Road, Nottingham they had the following children, Alfred born 1st May 1910, Harry born 16th January 1912 and John born 24th November 1913. In 1911 the family lived at 19 Bedford Square, Hyson Green, Nottingham, John is 23 yrs and a coal getter he is living with Lavinia 23 yrs and their son Alfred 1 year of age. Commencing 21st February 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 6 pence a week.
Private John Cooper, enlisted on 23rd April 1914 at Nottingham. He went to France on 25th February 1915 and was killed in action, 1st August 1915, aged 25, whilst serving in the line at Sanctuary Wood, Belgium. Buried: Sanctuary Wood Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 2. Row E. Grave 3.
In memoriam published 1st August 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “COOPER. – Killed in action at Hooge, August 1st, 1915, Private John Cooper, 1/7th Robin Hoods, age 25 years. When times are bad and friends are few, dear husband how I long for you; the one I loved and could not save, buried in an unknown grave. – From his sorrowing wife and children.” In memoriam published 1st August 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- 'Cooper. Killed in action August 1st 1915 Private John Cooper Sherwood Foresters. He lives with us in memory still and will for ever more. Wife, children.'
