John Allen was the son Arthur, a warehouse man, and Mary Allen (née Milford). His father was born in 1865 at Bulwell, his mother in 1867 at Nottingham. Married in 1885, they had five children - Annie b.1887, Mary b.1889, Florence H b.1891, John b.1896 and Jane b.1900. In 1901 they lived at 87 Beverley Street St Ann’s Nottingham. John Allen's address at the time of his death was 39 Coppice Road Nottingham (now Ransom Road) [Nottingham Evening Post photograph caption].

John Allen enlisted at Nottingham and landed in France on 13th September 1915. He died of wounds on 30th June 1917 and is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery Grave Reference: XIV C 15A
