Tom Tate was born in 1890 the son of John a building contractor and Eliza Ann Tate née Holliday and the brother of John Robert and Kate Tate. John was born in 1852 at South Witham, Eliza Ann Holliday was born in 1857 at Kirkby in Ashfield, they were married in 1879 the marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 4 children, 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 1 Sherwood Street Annesley Woodhouse Nottinghamshire.

Military History

Corporal Tom Tate, enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at East Kirkby he served with “L” Signal Company Royal Engineers, and died at the 5th Stationary Hospital on 18th September 1917 due to accidental injuries. He is buried in Janval Cemetery, Dieppe.

Article published on 28th September 1917 in the Mansfield Reporter and Sutton Times :- “KIRKBY DESPATCH RIDER DIES IN HOSPITAL. “News has come through to his parents of the death, in hospital in France, from injuries to the skull, of Corporal T. Tate, motor cyclist despatch rider in the Royal Engineers. Corporal Tate enlisted very early in the war, prior to which he was in business with his father and brother as builders and contractors.
