Alfred Shephard was born in 1881 the son of Alfred Charles a lace curtain maker and Ann Shephard (née Ball). His father was born in 1858 at Nottingham and died in the city aged 61 in 1918. His mother was born in 1861 also at Nottingham. Married in 1879, they had two further children Herbert b.1882 and Alice b.1883. In 1911 they lived at 39 Hazelwood Road Hyson Green Nottingham. Ann Shephard in 1919 was living at 23 Eyre Street Chesterfield.
109th Coy Alfred Shephard enlisted at Guildford on 16th September 1915. Initially posted (30724) to the Sherwood Foresters, he transferred to the Machine Gun Corps 16/6/1916. He embarked from Folkstone 18/6/1916, arriving in Boulogne the same day, and joined his company in the field on 19/6/1916. He was admitted to hospital with bronchitis on 7th October 1916 and after treatment rejoined on 27/10/1916. Hyde Park Corner (Royal Berks) Cemetery Belgium Grave Reference: A9
Nottingham Evening Post 4th January 1917: 'SHEPPARD. – Killed in action, December 25th, Private A. Sheppard, M.G.C., aged 36. Did his duty. – From his sorrowing father, mother, brothers, and sister.' In Memoriam notice published 'Nottingham Evening Post,' 24th December 1918. 'SHEPHARD. – In loving memory of Pte. Alfred Shephard, M.G.C., killed in action December 25th, 1916.
