Family History

George William was born in 1892 the son of George a mineral water carter and Mary Stocks née Wood and the brother of Sarah Ann and Mary Stocks. In 1911 they lived at 42 Park Street Kirkby in Ashfield. George was born in 1865 at Eakring, Mary Wood was born in 1868 at Brimington, Derbyshire, they were married on 3rd September 1888 their marriage was recorded at Staveley, Derbyshire. George William married his wife Annie Marriott in 1913 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, his widow lived at Berrisford Farm, South Normanton.

Military History

Gunner George William Stocks enlisted on 29th June 1915 and served with the Royal Field Artillery. He was discharged from the Army on 14th October 1919 being no longer fit for service due to problems with his knees, he had seen overseas service and was issued with a Silver War Badge Number 322879, He died on 12th April 1920 with pulmonary tuberculosis. He is buried in Kingsway Old Cemetery, Kirkby in Ashfield.
