John was born in 1891 in Nottingham and was the son of Matthew, a joiner, and Ada Notman née Robinson His father was born in 1865 in Nottingham and his mother Ada Robinson was born in 1867 also in Nottingham. They were married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham registration district. They had four children Matthew b1886, Kate b1889, John Henry b1891 and Alfred b1893. In the 1901 census the family are living at 2 Alpine Terrace, St Anns, Nottingham and are shown as Matthew head of the family 36 yrs a joiner; he is living with his wife Ada 34 yrs and their children Matthew 14 yrs a layer on, on a printing machine, Kate 11 yrs, John Henry 8 yrs and Alfred 7 yrs. John's parents died young; they both died in 1901, his mother Ada was 33 yrs of age when she died, the death being recorded in the June Quarter of 1901, his father died soon after on 16th December 1901 aged 36 yrs. He was living at 28 Lydnhurst Road at the time of his death. It would appear following the death of their parents the children lived with various relatives in the Sneinton area of Nottingham. In 1911 John Henry is living with his aunt, Eliza Notman, at 47 Loughborough Avenue, Sneinton Dale, Nottingham. His brother Matthew died in Nottingham aged 26 yrs in 1912 and his other brother, Alfred, also served with the Sherwood Foresters and was killed in action on 1st July 1916. His probate was proven with will on 13th October 1916 at Nottingham and shows him as John Henry Notman of 47 Spalding Road, Carlton Road, Nottingham Private H M Army died 8th November 1915 in France , his effects of £84 5 shillings and 3 pence went to Kate Notman spinster (his sister)
Pte John Henry Notman enlisted in Nottingham; he gave his residence as Sneinton, Nottingham. He served with the 1/7th Sherwood Foresters and went to Fance and joined the British Expeditionary Force on 28th February 1915. He was killed in action on 8th November 1915 and is buried in St Vaast Post Military Cemetery, Richebourg- L'Avoue, France grave reference II D 10. He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Obituary published 4th January 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “NOTMAN. – Killed in action, November 8th, Private J. H. Notman, 2705, 1/7th Robin Hoods. The midnight stars shine on the grave, of one we loved but could not save. Roses may wither, fade, and die, some may forget you, but never shall I. – From his sorrowing sister Kitty.” In memoriam published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 8th November 1916:- NOTMAN. – In loving memory of my dear brother, Private J. H. Notman, killed in action, November 8th, 1915. Too far away they grave to see, but not too far to think of thee. Sleep on, dear brother, take thy rest, they miss you most who loved you best. – From his sorrowing sister, Kitty. “NOTMAN. – In loving memory of Private J. H. Probate: Notman John Henry of 47 Spalding-road Carlton-road Nottingham private in HM Arny died 8 November 1915 in France Administration (with Will) Nottingham 13 October [1915] to Kate Notman spinster. Effects £84 5s. 3d. His brother Alfred Notman also served in the same battalion, 1/7th, Sherwood Foresters in the Great War. He was killed in action on first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916. He has no known grave is his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
