Family History

Bertie Rose was born in 1897 at Nottingham, he was the son of Arthur a fettler and Mary Rose née Eite and the brother of Hilda, Albert Edward, Violet and William Rose. Arthur was born in 1871 and Mary Eite was born in 1870 both were born in Nottingham, they were married on 25th December 1888 at St Matthias Church, Sneinton. In 1911 the family lived at 172 Gordon Road, Nottingham, Arthur is 40 yrs and a fettler he is living with his wife Mary 41 yrs and their 6 children including Bertie 14 yrs and an errand boy. Bertie married Gladys Ann Weatherbed (born 15th June 1896 ) in 1916 ay Nottingham, they lived at 70 Clarence Road, Nottingham, Commencing 6th May 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week. His widow later lived at13 Streatfield Crescent, Rossington, Doncaster

Military History

Private Bertie Rose initially enlisted on 21st May 1913 at Nottingham, giving his age as 17 yrs and 8 months, he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. On 28th September 1914 he was medically discharged from the Army as he was medically unfit for active service. He later re enlisted or was called up for service, he served with the 8th battalion South Staffordshire Regiment and was killed in action on 12th October 1917. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
