Benjamin was born in 1899 the son of Henry a brick layer’s labourer and Rosina Briggs (née Ingers). His father was born in 1871 at Nottingham and his mother in 1874 also at Nottingham. Married in Nottingham, they had eight children six surviving infancy - Charles b.1895 (killed in action 19/12/1915), Benjamin b.1899 (killed in action 3/10/1918), Henry b.1902, John b.1904, Thomas b.1906 and Mark b.1910. In 1910 they lived at 44 Milk Square Glasshouse Street and in 1911 at 4 Alvey’s Yard Fisher Gate (both Nottingham). At the time of his enlistment Benjamin was living with his father at 11 Snow Hill Colwick Street Nottingham.
Benjamin Briggs enlisted 23rd August 1916 at Nottingham giving his age as 17 years and 359 Days. He was posted to the reserves the following day and mobilised 20th March 1917 when he was posted to the 2/1st Battalion Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry. He was transferred to the Sherwood Foresters 22nd January 1917. He went missing in action on 3rd October 1918 and was buried at Ramicourt British Cemetery Aisne Grave Reference: A 7
