George Harry Withey was born in 1898 at Nottingham and was the son of Henry a lace maker and Hannah Elizabeth Withey née Bown of 4 Goodcliffe Street, Nottingham. His father Henry was born in 1875 at Nottingham, his mother Hannah Elizabeth Bown was born in 1876 also in Nottingham, they were married in 1896 at Nottingham and went on to have 3 children, one sadly died in infancy or early childhood, their remaining son Edward Benjamin Whithey. was born in 1906 at Nottingham. In the1911 census the family lived at 10 Craven Street Hyson Green Nottingham and were shown as Henry 36 yrs a lace maker he is living with his wife Hannah Elizabeth35 yrs and their sons George Harry 13 yrs a scholar and Edward Benjamin 5 yrs of age.

Military History

Private George Harry Withey enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Hyson Green, he served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
