Arthur Garratt was born in 1892 at Halloughton and was the son of the late William a horseman & Emma Garratt née Armstrong of Norwood Fields Southwell. His father Arthur was born in 1855 at Newark and died before 1911 and his mother Emma Armstrong was born in 1864 at Newark, they were married in 1887 at Newark, they went on to have the following children, William b1888, Maizie b1889, Arthur b1892, Annie b1898, Fred born 1900, Dora b1902 and Mary b1903, all were born at Halloughton. In the 1911 census his mother and siblings are living at Kirklington Road, Southwell and are shown as Emma Garratt 37 yrs a widow and washerwoman, she is living with her children, Annie 13 yrs a scholar, Fred 11 yrs a scholar, Dora 9 yrs a scholar and Mary 8 yrs a scholar. In the same 1911 census we find that Arthur has left the family home, he is living at Upper Langwith near Mansfield, he is shown as being 19 yrs single and is a servant working on a farm, he is living with James Brown 52 yrs a farmer and his wife Ann 58 yrs.
Private Arthur Garratt enlisted at Mansfield in October 1914 whilst living at Southwell, he initially served with the service number 18654 in the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment). He first entered a theatre of war on 1st October 1915 in the Balkans. He was serving with the 2nd battalion South Staffordshire Regiment when he died of wounds at the field hospital at Hordain, Germany, He is buried at Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, Pas de Calais, France.
