Thomas William Mellows was born in 1887 the son of Matthew a railway goods checker and Emma Mellows (née Stokes). His father was born in 1862 at Hawksworth, Nottinghamshire and his mother in 1858 at Nottingham. They were married in 1886 in Nottingham and also had a daughter Florence who was born in 1887. In 1901 the family was living at 10a Thurgarton Street Sneinton and in 1911 at 2 Lees Hill Street Sneinton. Matthew was a railway goods checker and Emma a lace finisher.
'B' Bty Thomas William Mellows enlisted at Nottingham. He saw no service overseas and took his own life. He is buried in the Nottingham Church Cemetery (St Pauls 9285).
Nottingham Evening Post 6th November 1915: ‘NOTTM. SOLDIER FOUND HANGING. Thomas Mellows, a private in the 188th Battery – (now stationed in Nottingham) – of the Royal Field Artillery, was found hanging in some stables on Sneinton Dale this morning. [6th November 1915] The body was cut down, but life had been extinct for a considerable time.
