Robert Henry Dawkins was born in 1889 the son of James a railway platelayer and Ashwell Butler Dawkins, née Bailey of 42 Woollaton Street Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire. His father James was born in 1855 at Wicken, Cambridgeshire and his mother was Ashwell Butler Bailey she was born in 1853 also in Wicken, they were married on 26th October 1878 at Wicken and went on to have 5 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Mary Ann b1882 Wicken, John b1884 Wicken and Robert Henry b1889 Hucknall. In 1911 census the family were living at 42 Wollaton Street, Hucknall and were shown as James 56 yrs a railway platelayer for the midland railway, he was living with his wife Ashwell 53 yrs and their married daughter Mary Ann Hodgkinson 29 yrs and her husband Wilfred Hodgkinson 28 yrs an elementary school teacher and their son Robert Henry Dawkins 22 yrs single a grocers assistant He married Selina Newcombe in 1912 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they lived at 17 Belvoir Street, Hucknall His probate was proven on 27th November 1917 at Nottingham and showed him as Robert Henry Dawkins, 17 Belvoir Street, Hucknall a Private in HM Army died 20th October 1917 at West Derby Hospital, Liverpool, his effects of £106, 4shillings and 1 pence were left to John Dawkins a colliery store keeper.
Private Robert Henry Dawkins enlisted at Derby he initially served with the service number 4385 in the Yorkshire Dragoons, he was serving with the 1/4th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry when he died at the Mill Road, Infirmary, West Derby Hospital, Liverpool. He body was returned to his family and he was buried in Hucknall Cemetery A. West.1248
