Family History

John Hugh Tomlinson was born in 1880 the son of Charles a laundry worker and Ellen Tomlinson née Kirkpatrick of 23 Brook Street, Derby. Charles was born in 1855 at Derby, Ellen Kirkpatrick was born in 1857 she died in 1894 aged 37 yrs, married in 1876 at Salford they had 5 further children. John Hugh married Emily Elizabeth Harris on 26th November 1904 at St Barnabus Church, Derby , they lived at 9 The Pastures Stapleford and had children, Emily Maud b January 1906 and Jack February 1907. In 1911 the family lived at 25 Middle Orchard Street Stapleford.

Military History

Company Sergeant Major John Hugh Tomlinson had previously served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment when he attested on 19th October 1914 at Derby, giving his age as 37 yrs, promoted to Corporal upon enlisted and promoted to Company Sergeant Major on 3rd May 1915. Embarking from Folkston on 26th February 1917 disembarking at Boulogne. Reported missing in action on 21st March 1918 and was subsequently deemed to have been killed in action on that date. He is at Buried Queant Road Cemetery, Buissy, France. Plot IV. Row A, Grave 5.
