He was the son of Thomas and Annie Smith and the brother of Grace, Evelyn, Oliver and Ernest Smith. In 1911 they lived at 130 Pym Street St Ann's Nottingham and later of 16 Eyres Avenue, Windmill Lane, Nottingham.
Pte. William Henry Smith, 1st Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, died as a prisoner of war on 27th September 1917. He is buried in Hamburg Cemetery. His capture was reported in the 'Nottingham Daily Express' on 21st July 1917 when a number of men from “C” Company, 1st Battalion were confirmed as prisoners of war, all of whom were captured on 4th April 1917
