He was the son of Frank and Anne Barton and the brother of George, Ellen, Clara, Charles, Mabel, Nellie and Ada Barton. In 1891 the family lived at 16 Upper Eldon Street Nottingham. In 1901, with George head of household, they lived at 3 Truman Street Alfred Street Central Nottingham. In 1911 Arthur was boarding at 1 Pleasant Terrace Upper Eldon Street Nottingham.
With an enlistment date of February 1912, Arthur was probably a special reservist. He went to France on 4 November 1914. Arthur was killed at Neuve Chapelle on 11 March 1915; he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial (Panels 27 and 27). The battalion war diary noted: 'At 10 am, 'C' company advanced North East through the orchard on the left of our line and occupied some broken down houses. Lt Weighall was killed in the advance. The battalion was shelled throughout the day by the enemy. At 4 pm, 'D' company charged the enemy breastworks but suffered heavy losses from machine gun fire and had to abandon the attack.'
NOTE: Details on Sneinton St Stephen read 'Arthur Barton' and on Nottingham St Mary Memorial and ROH, 'Arthur William Barton 50th Canadians'. There is no record on CWGC for an AW/Arthur William Barton either UK or Canadian forces although there is a Great War Canadian Attestation for an Arthur William Barton (b. Ontario) but he survived the war. The link has been decided on area of residence (Upper Eldon Street, Sneinton, and Alfred Street Central) which are close to the ecclesiastical boundary between Sneinton St Stephen and Nottingham St Mary.
