George was born in 1896 and was the son of Thomas and Julia Gouldin nee Collins of 37 Zulu Road Basford Nottingham. His father Thomas was born in 1859 in Doncaster and his mother Julia Collins was born in 1863 in Hucknall , they were married in 1880 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have 11 children sadly two of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their children listed in the 1901/1911 census were Thomas Alfred b1886 Hucknall, Emmeline b1889 Hucknal, Kate b1890 Hucknall, James b1893 Hucknall, George b1896 Hucknall, Henry b1898 Hucknall, Samuel b1900 Hucknall, John b1902 Shirebrook and Percy b1904 Shirebrook. In 1911 census the family are living at 37 Zulu Road, Basford and are shown as Thomas 52 yrs no occupation , he is living with his wife Julia 48 yrs and their children Emmerline 23 yrs a yarn slip winder, Kate 21 yrs a hose stamper, James 17 yrs a wheelwright, George 15 yrs a pony dirver underground, Henry 13 yrs a scholar, Samuel 11 yrs a scholar, John 9 yrs a scholar and Percy 7 yrs a scholar.
Private George Gouldin, served with the 2/6th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment. He landed in the Balkans on 31st December 1915 before arriving at the Western Front. He was killed in action on 2nd December 1917 and is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval.
His brother, Pte. James Gouldin, 8th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, was killed in action on 1st October 1917. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. Also born in Hucknall he was living at Basford at the time of his enlistment at Dinnington. Death notice published 'Nottingham Evening Post,' 18th December 1917. “GOULDIN. – Killed in action, December 2nd, L-Cpl. George Gouldin, Sherwood Foresters, aged 22. A bitter blow, a shock severe, to part with one we loved so dear; Christ will link the broken chain closer when we meet again. – From his sorrowing mother, father, brothers, cousin Kitty. Second son to fall. In memorial published 2nd December 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “GOULDIN. – Killed in action December 2nd, L-Cpl. George Gouldin, Sherwood Foresters. Will be sadly missed. – Sister Kate.” “GOULDIN. – To the honoured remembrance of our dear son and brother, Lance-Cpl. George Gouldin, killed in France December 2nd, 1917. Too dearly loved to be forgotten. Sadly missed. – Mother, dad, brothers. “GOULDIN. – In loving memory of Lce.-Cpl. George Gouldin, Sherwoods, aged 23. One sad year has passed away since our dear son was called away. – Sadly missed by his sorrowing mother, father, brothers, and sister, and cousin Ettie.” In memoriam published 2nd December 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “GOULDIN. – In affectionate remembrance of my dear brother, Lance-Cpl.
