Father John Newcomb, born in 1869 at Grantham, Lincolnshire and working as a lace machine builder. Mother: Ann Emma Newcomb, born in 1873 at Great Gonerby, Lincolnshire. Brother: John Robert, born in 1895 at Bradford, and working as a packer in a tobacco factory. Sisters: Gladys May, born in 1902 at Grantham and Mabel, born in 1905 in Nottingham. The family lived at 22 Newcastle Road, Nottingham before moving to 175 Rupert Street, Meadows, Nottingham.
Pte. Newcomb was called up for service and following training he was drafted to France. The battalion was involved in fighting during the Third Battle of Ypres. They were coming into the front line near Langemarck and were caught by heavy shelling. Pte. Newcomb was killed in action, but his body was never recovered. His name was, however, commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
In memoriam published 10th October 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “NEWCOMB. – In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Pte. Harold Newcomb, killed in action October 10th, 1917, aged 20.
