Samuel George Deacon

Samuel George (known as George) was born in 1889 (birth registered A/M/J Burton on Trent), the son of John Deacon and Lydia Deacon nee Gregson. John Deacon was born in Leicester (abt. 1854) and Lydia Gregson in Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire (abt. 1855). They had seven children of whom only five were still living at the time of the 1911 Census. Their surviving children were: Herbert, Jos. Arthur, Samuel George, Mabel Elizabeth and Jno. (Jack) Gregson. In 1901 John (47), a tailor working on his own account (at home), and Lydia (46) were living at 108 Uxbridge Street, Burton on Trent, with their five children, Herbert (22) also a tailor, Jos. Arthur (14) a pork butcher's apprentice, Samuel George (12), Mabel (8) and Jack (4). Also in the household was Lydia's unmarried sister, Sarah Gregson (44), a tailoress. George's father died in 1905 at the age of 51 and his widow, Lydia, was still living at 108 Uxbridge Road in 1911 and was working as a dressmaker from home. Jack (14) an errand boy, was the only child still living at home, while Lydia's sister Sarah Gregson was still in the household. Lydia Deacon died aged 79 in 1934 (death registered A/M/J Burton on Trent). George married Lucy Anne Garner (b. 1889, J/A/S Burton on Trent) in 1910 (marriage registered J/F/M Burton on Trent). Their only child, Julia Edna, known as Edna, was born on 22 April 1910. In 1911 George (22) and Lucy (21), a teacher of music on her own account (at home), together with their daughter Julia Edna (11 months), were living at 47 Thornley Street, Burton on Trent, in the home of Lucy's father, William Edward Garner (46), a dispenser, and his wife Sarah Jane (45). Lucy was probably William's daughter by an earlier marriage as in 1901 she and her father, a widower, were living with his widowed father, Thomas Garner (74, b. Wysall, Notts), who was the head of household, at 47 Thornley Street, Burton on Trent. Sometime after 1911 George and Lucy moved to Nottingham as this is where he enlisted. It is known that Lucy worked as a postwoman in Nottingham from about 1915 until at least 1917. At the time of George's death in August 1917 the family was living at 44 Edginton Street, Nottingham. No trace has yet been found of Lucy Deacon after 1917 and there is no mention of George's relatives on the CWGC record. However, their daughter Julia Edna (24), married Norman Muscroft (31) a labourer, at St James' church, Seacroft, West Yorkshire, on 15 September 1934. Julia, a dressmaker, was living at 32 Orchard Road, Crossgates, and her husband at Main Street, Seacroft. Julia Edna died in 2002 (death registered July, Leeds) age 92.
