Ernest Dutton was born in 1896 at Nottingham and was the son of Walter a beer off keeper and Annie Dutton néé Andrews of 30 Eastville Street, Peas Hill Road, Nottingham. His father Walter was born in 1871 in Leeds and his mother Annie Newton Andrews was born in 1873 in Crowland, Leicestershire, they were married in1891 in Nottingham and went on to have 6children, sadly one died in infancy their surviving children were Leonard b1894 Nottingham, Ernest b1896 Nottingham, Edward b1903 Nottingham, Edward b1903 Nottingham, Archie b1906 Arnold and Frank b1909 Arnold. In 1911 census the family lived at 137 Dame Agnes Street St Ann's Nottingham and were shown as Walter 40 yrs a beer off keeper, he is living with his wife Annie 38 yrs and their children Leonard 17 yrs a hotel page, Ernest 14 yrs a designer copier, Edward 8 yrs a scholar, Archie 5 yrs a scholar and Frank 2 yrs.
Private Ernest Dutton, enlisted on 13th May 1914 , giving his age as 17 yrs 6 months, his address as 30 Eastville Street, Nottingham, his occupation as a collier working for the Digby Colliery Company, his next of kin was his father Walter Dutton of the same address. He was posted to the 1/7th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment (Robin Hood Rifles). He was embodied on 5th August 1914, and embarked on 28th February 1915. He died at 8th Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, on 12th October 1915, his cause of death was “Syncope. N.Y.D.” (Heart Condition) He is buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery (grave ref I.K.12). He had served for 1 year and 153 days.
Nottingham Evening Post obituary 18 October 1915:- “DUTTON. – On the 12th inst., on active service, Private Ernest Dutton, 1/7th Robin Hoods, of 30, Eastville-street, in his 19th year. Greater love hath no man than this, he lay down his life for his friends. – From sorrowing father, mother, brothers, and sisters. “DUTTON. – In loving memory of Private Ernest Dutton, 1/7th Robin Hoods, died October 12th, 1915, aged 18 years, of 30, Eastville-street.” 'Dutton. On the 12th inst. on active service, Private Ernest Dutton, 1/7th Sherwood Foresters, of 30 Eastville Street, in his 19th year.'
