Family History

Douglas Christie Claydon was born in 1883 at Grantham and was the son of Henry and Susan Christie Claydon. His brother Horace Christie Claydon b1880 in Sierra Leonne In the 1901 census both Douglas and Horace are living at Balliol House, 78 Wentworth Street, Whitechapel, London , both are single and both are clerks. In the 1911 census he is living at 23 Noel Street, Forest Side Nottingham, he is shown as being 28 yrs single and a bank clerk, he is living with his aunts and uncles Hunter Christie Claydon, 66 yrs a retired clerk, Horace Claydon 65 yrs a retired clerk, Mary Claydon 74 yrs and Anne Theodore Claydon 61 yrs.

Military History

Private Douglas Christie Claydon, attested on 28th October 1915 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 33 yrs and 5 months , his address as 23 Noel Street, Nottingham and his next of kin as his father Henry Christie Claydon of Shelbrook, Hunstanton, Norfolk, his occupation was that of a bank clerk. He was posted to the reserves the following day . He was mobilised on 16th November 1916 at Dukes Road, London, he served with the 1/28th Battalion London Regiment (Artists' Rifles). He embarked from Southampton on 14th May 1917 landing the following day at Le Harve, France. He was killed in action on 18th August 1917 and is buried in Bailleul Road East Cemetery, St. Laurent-Blangy. Pas de Calais, France

Extra Information

His brother Horace Christie Claydon enlisted at Harleston on 30th November 1915 he was 35 yrs and 31 days old, he was an architect and served with the service number 40112 in the 12th battalion Middlesex Regiment. He landed in France on 16th August 1916. His pension records state he was a repatriated prisoner who had been wounded in the left arm , as a result of this wound he was discharged from the Army on 28th February 1918 as being no longer fit for war service.
