John Munns was born in 1888 in Nottingham the son of Arthur a boot repairer and Eliza Munns, née Fox. His father was born in 1855 in Leicester, his mother in 1863 at Melton Mowbray. They were married in 1877 at Leicester and had 12 children 3 of whom died in infancy or childhood. John’s surviving siblings were Annie b.1878 Leicester, Matilda b.1882 Leicester, Ada b.1885 Nottingham, Fred b.1892 Nottingham, Herbert b.1895 Nottingham, Lucy b.1897 Nottingham, Maud b.1900 Nottingham, Ivy b.1900 Nottingham, and Alfred b.1902 Nottingham. In 1911 they lived at 5 Frederick Place Newark Street Nottingham.
John Munns enlisted in Nottingham on 16th October 1907 when he was already serving in the 4th (Territorial) Battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was posted to the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters. He landed in France on 4th November 1914 and was admitted to the 12th Stationary Hospital on 4th December 1914 with frostbite. He was killed in action on 11th March 1915 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial Panels 26 and 27
His younger brother Herbert Munns also served with the Sherwood Foresters, landing in France as a reinforcement for the 2nd Battalion on 11th November 1914. He was wounded and for a time transferred to the Labour Corps before returning to the Sherwood Foresters. He survived the war.
