Thomas was born in 1887 the son of John William Voce (died Nottingham 1894 aged 35) a fish hawker and Jane Voce née Gray. His father was born in 1859 at Nottingham and his mother Jane Gray in 1859 at Bingham. They were married in Nottingham in 1879 and had eleven children, one of whom died in infancy. Thomas’s surviving children, all born in Radford were John William, George, Florence, James, Leonard, Hilda, Gertrude, Arthur and Fred .Thomas married Emma Burton at the Nottingham Registry Office in 1908 . In 1911 Thomas’s mother and the rest of his family were living at 6 Wolsey Street Radford. In the same census Thomas and his wife Emma are living 2 doors away at 10 Wolsey Street, Radford, Thomas is 23 yrs of age and a cotton doubler. Emma was notified 30/9/1915 that she would be receiving a pension of 10 shillings a week for herself to take effect from 4th October 1915. She married James Dodge in 1917 and they lived at 8 Landall Square Gamble Street Nottingham.
Thomas Voce enlisted in Nottingham on 15th August 1914 at Nottingham for six years service with the Special Reserve he gave his age as 26 yrs and 85 days, his occupation was that of a labourer He had seen previous service with the Sherwood Foresters but was discharged as time expired in 1910. He was serving with the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters when he landed in France on 27th December 1914 and was killed in action on 11th March 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Tourest Memorial, France Panel 26
Obituary published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 7th April 1915 : - ‘ VOCE – On March 11th, killed in action, Private T. Voce, 1st Sherwood Foresters , the beloved husband of Emma, and son of Jane Voce of 6, Wolsey Street, aged 28 yrs. He did his duty. ‘ In memoriam posted 11th March 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “VOCE. – In loving memory of our dear son and brother, Thomas, killed in action March 11th, 1915.
