John Brereton was the son of Henry Brereton a picture frame mounter and Margaret Ann Brereton née Faulkener. Both parents were born in Salford, his father Henry in 1847 and his mother in 1854 and they were married there in 1877. They had six children, all born in Salford, except Margaret who was born in Nottingham:- Rosa b.1879, James b.1881, John b.1883, Jennie b.1886, Henry b.1890 and Margaret b.1894. The family moved to Nottingham between 1890 and 1894 and was living at 1 Henry Street Norton Street Nottingham in 1901. In 1911 Henry and John lived at 7 Baron Street Nottingham. John’s mother had died at Nottingham in 1898 aged 45 and his father passed away in 1914 aged 67. John’s estate was left in favour of his sister Rosa Heslop.
John enlisted at Nottingham into the Northumberland Fusilier as a reservist. He was embodied when war broke out, his battalion landing at Le Harve in France on 14th August 1914. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres Belgium.
