Clarence was born in 1894 in Nottingham the son of Alfred a painter and Mary Elizabeth Priest née Hewitt of 20 Ella Road, West Bridgford. His father was born in 1861 at Oldbury Worcestershire and his mother in 1864 at Hammersmith London. They were married in 1883 in Nottingham and had 12 children, 5 of whom died in infancy or childhood prior to 1911. Their surviving children were all born in Nottingham and were : - Lilly Ann 1885, James William 1889, Alfred 1892, Clarence Joseph 1894, Hilda Mary 1896, Clarice 1899 and Alec 1909. In 1901 the family was living at 38 Campbell Grove Nottingham. By the 1911 census they had moved to 78 Radford Road Nottingham.
Clarence Joseph Priest enlisted at West Bridgford on 11th December 1915. He was posted to the reserves on the following day and was eventually mobilised on 3rd February 1916 and posted to the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters with the service number 34488 on 5th February 1917. He was transferred to the Home service Employment Company of the Labour Corps on 28th April 1917. He served on the home front throughout the war and was at his home address when he died of pneumonia on 16th February 1919. He was buried on 20th February 1919 at the Nottingham General Cemetery.
The following obituary appeared in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 17th February 1919 - 'PRIEST Pte C.J. Priest third and beloved son of Alfred and Mary Priest, died of pneumonia February 16th 1919 aged 25 yrs of 20 Ella Road, West Bridgford , Peace after pain – From broken hearted family.'
