Family History

Harry was born in 1893 (registered O/N/D), the son of Arthur A. Jackson and Elizabeth Ann Jackson nee King. Arthur and Elizabeth were married in 1893 (registered J/A/S) Nottingham). In 1901 Arthur (29), a postman who had started with the Post Office as a telegraph messenger, and Elizabeth (27), a lace mender, were living at 24 Tyne Street, Nottingham, with their two children, Harry (7) and Alice May (5, b. 1895). Elizabeth died in 1909 (registered J/F/M, Nottingham) at the age of 37, and in 1911 Harry (17) and Alice (15), a book binder's sewer, were living with their widowed maternal grandmother, Elizabeth King, at 110 Willoughby Street, New Lenton. Elizabeth King (69) a grocery dealer on her own account, had several generations of her family living with her as well as Harry and Alice: an unmarried daughter, Alice (34) a tailor's machinist, a married daughter, Ann Hoe (36), her husband, Joseph (36) a tailor's coat hand, and their children Elsie (12) and Doris (3) together with another grandchild, William Copel King (18) a coal carter.

Military History

17th Bn. Formerly 2400 Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment). He served in France from 28 February 1915. He died of wounds and is buried in Cambrai East Military Cemetery (grave ref. I.A.1). He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 19 October 1918: ‘Jackson. Killed in action October 12th Cpl Harry Jackson, North Midland Cyclist Corps, 14 Matthew Street, age 22. Father, grandmother, Auntie May.’ His father, Arthur, was his sole legatee.
