According to the notice which was published in the Nottingham Post on 23 April 1917, WH Anderson was the only son of Bettina Anderson of Storer Terrace, Nottingham. Military records, including CWGC, give his name as Herbert William and the entries on the 1901 and 1911 Census also have his first name as Herbert. His year of birth is given on several records as 1896. A marriage record of 1880 and the 1891 Census suggest that Herbert was the son of Reuben Anderson and Bettina (also Bethina) Anderson nee Perkins. Reuben was born in Nottingham in 1859 (J/F/M). Bettina was also born in Nottingham in 1859 (A/M/J), the daughter of John Thomas and Leila A Perkins. Reuben and and Bettina were married in Nottingham in 1880 and according to the 1911 Census she had three children of whom only two were still living at the time of the census. In 1891 Reuben (32), a warehouseman, and Bettina (32) were living at 4 Barker Gate, Nottingham, with their daughter Mary (9). Ten years later in 1901 Bettina (40) was living at 52 Barker Gate with her two children, Mary (20) a lace hand clipper and Herbert (5). Bettina, who was also a lace hand clipper, was married but described as the head of the household. By 1911 Bettina (51), Mary (30) and Herbert (15) were living at 23 Manvers Street, Nottingham; also in the household was a boarder, Harriet May Hayard (18), a lace worker. Bettina described herself as a widow and the head of the household. However, in 1911 there is a record of a Reuben Anderson (52), a carter, living at 68 Ranton Street, New Basford, in the home of his brother Thomas, his wife Sarah and their children. Bettina was living at 3 Storer Terrace, Storer Street, Nottingham when her son's death was confirmed in 1917. There is a record of the death of a Reuben Anderson who was aged 60 (b. abt. 1859) in 1919 (death registered March, Nottingham registration district). The death of a Berthina Anderson was registered in Nottingham in 1924; however she was 68 years old and had been born 'about 1856' which does not match exactly other records of Bettina's date of birth.
He was reported missing on 17 July 1916 but his death was not confirmed until April the following year. He is buried in Guillemont Road Cemetery, Guillemont (grave ref. VII.I.10). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 23 April 1917: ‘Anderson. Reported missing July 17th 1916, now officially reported killed, Private WH (sic) Anderson, Sherwood Foresters, only son of Bettina Anderson, 3 Storer Terrace, Storer Street, in his 21st year. Mother.’ His mother was his sole legatee.
