He was the son of Josiah and Emma Clarke and the brother of Diana, Harold, Polly, Jack Lewis, Tommy, Lily and Jack Clarke. In 1911 they lived at 4 Claude Street Old Lenton Nottingham. He married Alice Ann Spick at St James Church Nottingham on 16th April 1911 they had a daughter Alice Emma Clarke born 9th October 1913 at Nottingham. In the 1914 newspaper entry his address is listed as 32 Bunting Street, Dunkirk, Nottingham His widow Alice went on to receive a pension of 15 shillings for herself and her daughter with effect from 19th April 1915.
Driver Joseph Clarke, 40th Brigade Royal Field Artillery, enlisted on 7th April 1906 at Nottingham he was 19 yrs and 2 months of age and was a painter. He and served with the Royal Field Artillery and was mobilised for war on 5th August 1914 following its outbreak and posted to the 40th Brigade Royal Field Artillery . He was admitted to hospital on 26th September with pneumonia and died in No. 5 Clearing Hospital, Braine, on 29th September 1914. He is buried in Braine Communal Cemetery, Aisne, France (Sp Mem B.1)
