George William was born in 1894 in East Leake and was the son of Richard (Dick) a wicker chair maker and Mary Doughty née Marshall of The Gardens, Costock Road East Leake. His father Dick was born in 1869 in East Leake his mother Mary Marshall was born in 1872 in Wymswold, Leicestershure , they were married in 1893 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district, they went on to have 9 children, sadly two of whom died in infancy or early childhood prior to 1911 their children were : George William b1894, Lilian b1896, Laura b1900, Harold b1902, Horace b1902, Florence b1907 and May Doughty b1908. In the 1911 census the family are living at The Gardens Costock Road, East Leake and are shown as Dick 41 yrs a wicker basket maker ,he is living with his wife Mary 39 yrs and their children , George William 17 yrs a platelayer on a railway , Lillian 15 yrs an upholsteress, Laura 11 yrs a scholar, Harold 9 yrs Horace 9yrs, Florence 4 yrs and May 3 yrs
Gunner George William Doughty, enlisted on 22nd October 1914 at Nottingham , he was 21 yrs and 40 days old, he gave his place of birth as East Leake and stated his religion was that of Wesleyan and that he was a town labourer. He joined the RGA at Newhaven on 26th October 1914. He landed in France on 20th May 1915 and was posted to the 9th trench mortar battery on 11th June 1915. He was killed in action on 16th July 1915, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial, Panel 1,
