Family History

George William was born in Bingham on 5th September 1894 and was the son of Hannah Braithwaite In the 1911 census George has left the family home, he is living at 5 Pearson Street, Netherfield, Nottingham, he is shown as being 16 yrs a single and is a boarder, he is an office boy working for the Great Northern Railway, he is living with Thomas Durrance 65 yrs a widower and a police pensioner.

Military History

Corporal George William Brathwaite enlisted at Nottingham , he initially served with service number 21981 in the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire ) Regiment. He landed in France on 15th July 1915 and was later transferred to the 11th Cheshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 15th March 1918 and he is buried in Favreil British Cemetery, grave reference 2.E.23 The award of his military medal was gazetted on 27th July 1917

George's name was added to the memorial in 1995. In memoriam published 15th March 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BRAITHWAITE. – In loving remembrance of my dear brother, killed in action March 15th, 1918.
