William Street

William was born in 1896 the son of Henry and Sarah Ann Street. Both Henry and Sarah were born in Riddings, Derbyshire. Sarah Ann was born about 1863, the daughter of Thomas and Mary George, and married Henry in 1882. They were to have seven children of whom only five were still living at the time of the 1911 census. Six children were named on the census between 1891 and 1911: Mary E (b. Riddings), Bertha Annie (b. 1886, Riddings), John Thomas (b. 1889 Grassmoor, Derbyshire), Harry (b. 1891, Riddings, d. 1898), Alfred Ernest (b. 1892, Riddings) and William (b. 1896, Pilsley). In 1891 Henry, a coal miner, and Sarah were living on Alfred Street, Alfreton, with their four children; Mary (7), Bertha (5), John (2) and Harry (4 months). Harry appears to have died in 1898 (J/A/S) aged 7. By 1901 they were living in Pilsley; three children were in the home the night of the census, John, Alfred (8) and William (5). Also in the household was Henry's nephew, Jas Ball (20, b. Halifax), who also worked in the pit as a banksman. Henry and Sarah's second daughter, Bertha, married John Mills in Pilsley on 16 April 1906. In 1911 they were living in Nottingham at 160 Russell Road and had one son John Henry (4). In 1911 Henry and Sarah were living in Mansfield at 43 Broxtowe Drive with their three youngest sons; John, Alfred and William. All three boys were, like their father, working at the colliery; John was a miner and both Alfred and William were labourers (above ground). The family was still living at 43 Broxtowe Drive when William's brother, Alfred, enlisted on 10 September in the Sherwood Foresters. He survived the war, being discharged on 20 June 1919 at the age of 26, having been promoted to A/QM Sergeant on 28 March 1919. (Silver Badge B224729). Alfred had married Lily May Chamberlain in Mansfield parish church on 24 July 1915 and they had a son, Kenneth Alfred born 26 September 1918. They lived at Rock Hill, Mansfield. William's parents later lived at 3 King Street, Mansfield (CWGC). Sarah died on 24 January 1928 aged 65 years.
