Military History

Smith was called up for service and following training he was drafted to France. The battalion took part in the Third Battle of Ypres. It occupied trenches near Langemarck before advancing under a creeping barrage. It captured several concrete pill boxes and fought off German counter-attacks. The battalion held the ground that it had gained but Smith was killed in action. His body was never recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
