Family History

Edwin Singleton was born in 1894 at Nottingham and was the son of the late Fred a furniture dealer and Mary Singleton née Haskard of 1 Bradleys Yard, Ilkeston Road, Nottingham. His father Fred was born in 1854 at Radford , he died on 26th August 1899 he was aged 45 yrs, his mother Mary Haskard was born in 1859 at Nottingham, they were married in 1886 at Nottingham, they had 4 children sadly 2 died in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving child was a daughter Harriett born 1891 in Nottingham. in the 1911 census the family lived at 1 Bradley's Yard Ilkeston Road Radford Nottingham and were shown as Mary 51 yrs a widow , she is living with her children, Harriett 21 yrs a lace jennier and Edwin 17 yrs a lace draughtman

Military History

Private Edwin Singleton enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Carrington, he served in the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 29th June 1915 and was killed in action on the 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme, during the advance on Gommecourt, he is buried at Gommecourt Wood New Cemetery, Foncquevillers.
