Father: James Albert Rudge, born in 1875 at Poiton, Worcestershire and working as a railway labourer and later as a stoker. Mother: Annie Rudge, born in 1874 at Nottingham. Brothers: James Albert, born in 1908 at Nottingham and George Ernest, born in 1909 in Nottingham. Sisters:Jessie A., born in 1897 in Nottingham and employed as a hosiery worker, Clara Annie, born in 1903 in Nottingham and Fanny, born in 1909 in Nottingham. The family lived at 7 Grove Terrace, Meadows, Nottingham before moving to 58 King's Meadow Road, Meadows, Nottingham.
Cpl. Rudge volunteered for service, enlisting on 05/08/1914 at Nottingham. he was posted to 4th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters on 26/08/1914, and trained at Whitley Bay. He was drafted to France on 01/12/1916 and joined 1st Battalion. It was involved in the heavy fighting during the retreat that started with the launch by the Germans of Operation Michael. Cpl. Rudge was reported missing and was later confirmed as killed in action on 26/03/1918. His body was never recovered, but his name was commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial.
In memoriam published 26th March 1920 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “RUDGE. – In loving memory of Corpl. William Rudge, 1st Sherwood Foresters, killed March 26th, 1918.
