Albert Cuthbert was born in 1896 at Fosdyke, Lincolnshire and was the son of Henry a railway porter and Sarah Ann Cuthbert née Green of 73 Lambert Street, Hyson Green, Nottingham. His father Henry was born in 1863 at South Etherington, Lincolnshire, his mother Sarah Ann Green was born in 1856 at Pinchbeck, Lincolnshire they were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Spalding registration district, they went on to have 6 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were Alice 1892, Harry b1894, Alfred b1896 all were born at Fosdyke, they had further children, Ethel Merryweather b1898 and Thomas William Cuthbert b1901 both were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family lived at 72 Randall Street Hyson Green Nottingham and were shown as Henry Cuthbert 48 yrs a railway porter, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 55 yrs and their children, Alice 19 yrs a sewing machinist, Harry 17 yrs a publishers assistant, Alfred 15 yrs a printers labourer, Ethel 13 yrs a scholar and Thomas William 10 yrs a scholar.
Rifleman Alfred Cuthbert enlisted at Nottingham on 7th September 1914, he gave his age as 19 yrs and 40 days, he was an engine cleaner, his next of kin was his mother Sarah Ann Cuthbert of 72 Randall Street, Nottingham, he was posted to the King's Royal Rifle Corps and attended their depot at Winchester on 10th September 1914. He served with the 11th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps and landed in France on 21st July 1915 he was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 and having no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Pier and Face 13A and 13B).
