Walter Merrin was born in 1890 at Southwell and was the son of Henry a farm labourer and the late Mary Ellen Merrin née Richmond of Southwell. His father Henry was born in 1868 at Southwell and his mother Mary Ellen Richmond was born in 1868 also at Southwell, she died in 1908 at Southwell she was 41 yrs of age, they were married in 1888 at Southwell and went on to have the following children, Ada Elizabeth b1889, Walter b1891, Annie b1893, Thomas b1895 and Alfred b1897, all were born in Southwell. In the 1911 census Walter is living with his aunt and uncle at Westhorpe, Southwell and they are shown as Robert Merrin 29 yrs a farm labourer, living with his wife Mary Jane Merrin 32 yrs and their children Percy 9 yrs and Charles 5 yrs, Walter Merrin is 21 yrs of age a nephew and a farm labourer. In the same 1911 census we find his widowed father is living with his widow mother at Back Lane Westhorpe, Southwell and are shown as Esther Merrin 68 yrs a widow, she is living with her son Henry Merrin (age unknown ) a farm labourer and her grandchildren, Thomas 16 yrs a farm labourer and Horace 12 yrs a scholar.
Private Walter Merrin attested at Nottingham on 30th December 1915 , he gave his age as 24 yrs and 9 months he gave his address as 2 Suez Street, Old Basford, he stated he was a stoker at a hosiery factory. His next of kin was his father Henry Merrin of Westhorpe, Southwell. He was posted to the reserves and was mobilised for war on 1st June 1916 and joined at Derby and was posted to the 10th battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He embarked from Folkstone on 21st September 1916 disembarking the following day at Boulogne. He was transferred on the 14th October 1916 to the 6th battalion York and Lancaster Regiment. He was killed in action on 18th June 1917 and is buried at Wulverghem-Lindenhoek Road Military Cemetery, Wesr-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
His young brother Private Alfred Merrin enlisted at Mansfield and served with the 8th battalion Seaforth Highlanders, he died of wounds on 6th February 1917 and is buried at St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, Seine-Maritime, France.
