Family History

Frederick Charles Knowles (junior) was born in 1877 he was the son of Thomas Charles Knowles (senior) and Hannah Maria Knowles née Hough of 59 St Matthias Road Nottingham. Frederick Charles (junior) married Annie Wheat (born 13th April 1884, they lived at 8 Haywood Street, Sneinton, in 1904 at Nottingham, they went on to have 7 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, they were Fred Herbert born 1st May 1904, George Arthur born 17th September 1906, Ethel Alice born 3rd June 1908, Florence Ada born 4th May 1911 and Clara Winnie born 23rd January 1913. In 1911 they lived at 6 Lower Eldon Street and later 38 Hooton Street Nottingham.

Military History

Sergeant Frederick Charles Knowles enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Sneinton, he initially served with the Grenadier Guards and served in the South African campaign. The Boer War. On the outbreak of war he enlisted and served with the 22nd Battalion, Manchester Regiment, he was killed in action on 1st July 1916 the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Havin no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
