Family History

Ralph was the son of Arthur an engine driver (stationary) at the municipal gas works and Minnie Hutson. He was the brother of Samuel, Herbert, Marshall and Kathleen Hutson. In 1911 they lived on Athorpe Grove Vernon Road Old Basford Nottingham.

Military History

Ralph Hutson served with 17th battalion prior to the 9th. The battalion was conducting operations in the vicinity of St Julien when Ralph was killed. They were also tasked with getting supplies to the front line which in the mud was far from easy. During this time the enemy artillery was always heavy and accurate. It is likely that Ralph along with three other men killed that day was hit by the shelling as none have a known grave. He received the British War Medal and Victory Medal which means he enlisted sometime after 1 January 1916. John Morse
