John Daniel Crowston was born in 1898 the son of Daniel a shoeing smith and Mary Crowston née Beers of High Road Old Chilwell Nottinghamshire. Daniel Crowston was born in 1873 at Ripley, Mary Beers was born in 1877 at Sawley, married on 25th December 1896 at Wesleyan Chapel Long Eaton, they had 6 children and in 1911 they lived at Kelham village near Newark. .

Military History

Private John Daniel Crowston enlisted on 10th December 1915, at Beeston, Nottinghamshire. giving his age as 18 yrs, his occupation was iron moulder he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised on 28th April 1917 and landed in France on 30th July 1917 he was posted to the 2/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, 18th August 1917. He was killed in action, 26th September 1917, during the attack on the German positions near St. Julian, Belgium. Commemorated: Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. Panel 99 to 102 and 162 to 162A.
