William Castles was born in 1896 at Basford and was the son of Thomas Brown Castles a dyers labourer and Caroline Castles née Hawkins of 49 Arnold Road, Old Basford, Nottingham. His father Thomas Brown was born in 1863 at Lenton, his mother Caroline Hawkins was born in 1864 in London, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children all born in Basford were, Walter b1887, Gertrude b1894, William b1896, Thomas Wilfred b1899 and Arthur b1902. In the 1911 census the family are living at 49 Arnold Road, Old Basford and are shown as Thomas Brown Castles 48 yrs a dyers labourer, he is living with his wife Caroline 47 yrs and their children, Walter 24 yrs a hosiery trimmer, William 15 yrs a trimmers assistant, Wilford 12 yrs a scholar Gertrude 17 yrs and Arthur 9 yrs a scholar.
Private William Castles enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He was killed in action on 9th April 1917, having no known grave his names is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate, Memorial, Belgium.
